The nose is rich and evocative, and transports you instantly to the starkly beautiful shores of Scotland: smoldering embers, a gentle tarriness. A second nosing brings notes of chili pepper, charred citrus rind, freshly fired crème brûlée, browned butter, and tarte au citron. Close your eyes, and you can pick up a distinct maritime and brine character. On the palate, that characteristic Lagavulin smoke — a slow-burning bonfire — is distinct and marvelous, but it’s also backed by a host of complementary notes, among them cracked black pepper, tangy chilis, lemon, and lime, and washing waves of brine. The note of smoke carries to the finish, which adds a vivifying note of lemon and salt. Superb.
